Depends which version of Nexus you have.
The version on sale at Steam should have MP capability after the latest patch (version 1.02).
I haven't seen that much activity in the lobby. When I start a game sometimes somebody wanders in, but not many people start a MP server.

Now that I know that a Nexus model viewer exists, I'll have to locate it (I assume its either a mod tool on this website, or in the install folder) and give it a whirl. I think once I have a better understanding of how the ship operates it'll be a lot easier for me going forward.

The mod tools can be found under Nexus The Jupiter Incident\mod_tools. The model viewer is called 'viewer_DX9'.

The artstuff of the game is largely beyond me. I'd say The Old Dragon is the man to ask for.

The tool link you showed us seems a corrupt one. Perhaps this is the one Dragon meant.

Definitely true regarding unused and unfinished meshes.
Background activity? You mean extra secondary objectives, or 'civilian' traffic/objects not directly related to the mission at hand? There are a couple missions (especially the ones with stations in it) that lend themself for that.

Questions to the participants of this 'little' project.

For instance, do you feel my little relabeling of planets and moons in sol system is worthy of extending to the other star systems in the game? Should objects within star systems be open for repositioning in order to simplify or make them more visual interesting? That last one would likely need fixed positions in briefings to be reworked.
There's a dozen or so unused device meshes in the earth\devices map. Do we link existing weapons to these to show more diversity?
Do we use or switch other meshes from within the game? I am for instance fond of the kisszallito_01 model over the escape_pod model as old Earth shuttle. The latter looks too Noahish to me.
Or even models from outside? I spotted a nice usable fighter model or two in Arparso's Freespace Evolution mod with not too many polies (if he's willing to see it used elsewhere).

But I bet that they put alot more love in the Gorg fighter, even if its RCS thrusters don't work.

I'm not surprised with Phobos. The mesh needs more then one texture.

phobos, phobos01, and phobos02.

Deimos uses asteroid_1024x512_012.

Some of those texture files in the textures\planets folder are not used, or double up.

I noticed that too on my reversed Mars texture.

Have you tried using your texture on jstubbles sphere mesh (battlestar galactica mod, version 4.1-4.5 I believe) to see if the seem disappears?

Something else, could you check your texture/planets folder and tell me if the sol_0503_europa texture on your end is another size then 683 kb? I'm not sure if the one on my end was one I created years ago, or the original one.

Are these screenshots taken from the solar system file that ships with the game, or with the one I tinkered with?
It shouldn't be much of a problem to "shift" the side Charon and Pluto show towards the shukenja beta asteroid field. And the final solution could be to make the Shukenja Beta asteroid field the barycenter of Pluto and Charon. In other words, they would orbit around the asteroid field, same side always showing towards the mission map.

Installed. Seems to work fine.
Overwrote some files (01, 02, 03, 10.ini) in the MOVIES folder to check things out.
Its how far I came with the movie subtitles sofar.
