A little word
« on: May 19, 2011, 18:06:34 »
Hi there,

I wasn't sure so I put this message in the general section.
This is just to introduce myself a bit...

I bought Nexus in 2004 and I'm still playing it, I think we can say that this is my favorite game  ;)
I usually re-play the missions trying new tactics (all laser, all missiles...) like in the...Briseur de Blocus in french, the mission just before the earth big battle. I love to equip the Angelwing with only torpedoes and playing hide and seek with asteroids and the ship's invisibility  ;D

I tryied many mods, I'm actually playing "new conflicts" (and loosing at mission 5......) and I like this kind of universe, no shields (yet), crappy human's technologies etc...

Well, I was glad to see the wiki to help me in my learning to mod the game and this forum wich is sill active in 2011 \o/
So this is a thank's ! I will try to spend time to learn Nexus's scripts and creating campaigns, with your help if you're willing to.

Greetings from Switzerland/France ;)

It's great to hear from new people! Our community is quite small, so anyone that shows interest is highly welcome here :)
So, you're looking into modding? that's actually great!
However, modding the campaign can be quite difficult and frustating if you don't have much experience in the modding department, so my personal recommendation is that you start with a regular mod, not a campaign base-one.

Thank's

What I would like to do is just scripting some new missions using the ships from Nexus in order to assemble them in a campaign.
I'm more interresting in a nice story line in the solar system instead of adding new ships, new races or whatever.

So from my understanding it would be some sol system editing, mission scripting (and dialogues boxes without voices) and the campaign part would be the briefings to help the story line.
But yay, first things first, I need to script just one mission ;)

Yeah, that's a great way to start. Just create a regular mod and script the missions and dialog there. Once you're done, you can move on to the briefings and the campaign-related coding, the mission code is almost the same.
But beleive me, you do not want to jump in straight into the campaign scenario... debugging missions there is a major pain in the ass. And I can tell you that from experience.

I second that. Nexus' modding support sadly doesn't include campaign-level modding. While it is definitely possible, a lot of stuff there is undocumented and you won't be able to use the debugging features of the mission editor for your campaign scripts... which makes developing a campaign into a real technical challenge.

Start off with a "simple" mod and create your story missions as single, independent missions, which the player will just need to play in the correct order to follow your story. If you get that working and feel confident and brave enough, with your missions already up and running you can look into campaign modding and seek further advice on how to proceed with that.

Me, I'm overhauling the campaigns. :)

Phaser/easy mode mod is attempting this. Need to get my skills back after a long break from life issues.
