Where did Sci-Fi go? (tv, cinema)
« on: March 23, 2011, 22:47:28 »
Seriously... seems like barely anything good comes out nowadays for us Sci-Fi geeks. BSG is gone, Caprica is cancelled, SGU too, etc.

Is there any decent Sci-Fi show left (or upcoming)? Not fantasy monster-hunt stuff (Sanctuary?), not quirky funny Sci-Fi (Eureka), but just "regular" more serious traditional Sci-Fi with space ships, strange new worlds or societies or whatever...

Movies, too! What was the last great Sci-Fi movie you've seen at the big screen (hopefully not "Pocahontas in Space" a.k.a. Avatar)? For me it's probably "Sunshine"... four frakking years ago... :(

Personaly, I'm happy that BSG is gone. Yeah, it was a good show but story was.................well, mish-mash.

And you are right. It seems there is no space sci-fi anymore. StarTrek gone, StarGate soon gone, B5 long gone, Lexx gone, Red Dwarf gone  ;). Generaly space sci-fi is on the edge of dead. In gaming it is dead for at least 5 or so years.

Well Doctor Who is quite awesome. It's started again a couple of years back, on 05 after about 20 something years of inactivity, and it's rather good. And very hardcore sci-fy, too. Time travel, paralel universe, space action, you name it.
Other than that... I'm out.

Yup, Doctor Who is about all there is now. Like Malurac says, it's quite awesome.

Really? I only saw one or two episodes a couple of years back (from the first new season, I believe) and found it ... well ... pretty cheap and awful. Only saw the dubbed version on German TV, though, so maybe that has something to do with it. Never quite understood the appeal of Doctor Who after seeing those episodes, but I keep hearing about how great it is. I probably will give it another try then.

Mmm... I consider Avatar not really "in space". I did like the movie though. ;)

I suppose the last rather good scifi stuff (in space thus) I've seen was Razor, a more or less standalone movie in the BSG series.

On Dr. Who, I never got the hang of it. And neither the derivate(s).

Well, Doctor Who does have some... repetitive notions, like most chapters are about the inpending destruction of Earth that is avoided in the last second and all that stuff, but in my opinion the acting is superb, especially the tenth doctor, David Tennant.
The effects aren't what you would consider top notch, but they're better than you'd expect, but what really appeals me about the series is their seamingless combination of drama and comedy in each chapter and the funny and well thought time paradoxes that appear most of the time (being the main character a time traveler that was to be expected)

And I won't deny that some episodes are pretty cheap and forgettable but there's a reason this series been running since the 60's. Perhaps you just didn't got lucky when you saw those episodes...

I prefer my scifi more to the "Blake's Seven" kinda things then Dr. Who's endless plots.

Doctor Who is back and meaning business!
One of the best episodes of the series I've seen, and most certainly the best season opening I've laid eyes upon in a while...

Ah great... now even V is gone, too. Certainly wasn't my favourite show, but first season was pretty enjoyable nevertheless. Haven't yet seen second season, though.

Let's see, if Falling Skies will be worth watching... I'm a bit doubtful, but there aren't many alternatives left :(

Falling Skies - First Trailer

@DreamorCZ:
Red Dwarf, eh? Never heard of it, but the few clips I've seen on youtube seem funny enough. Don't know if it's worth watching the old seasons, though, since there'll be no nostalgia bonus for me.

Mmm, those aliens look like a mix of Martians from "War of the Worlds" and the bugs from "Starship Troopers". ;)

And I finally became "Specialist".  ;D

I am enjoying falling skies though. Good show. It's better than V IMO, but I could do without the family lovey dovey story. But then again, that's Spielberg for ya...

Alpha's on SyFy is decent. Sorta like Xmen meets Heroes.

Ridley Scott's Prometheus is coming out next year. It takes place before his "Aliens" movies and is in that same universe, but is apparently not a direct prequel to Alien.

Also, a more realistic sci-fi coming out is Apollo 18.
